If you have questions about your hospital or outpatient services bills, please contact our Financial Services Department at (859)239-2342.

Your Bill

When you receive care at our hospitals (whether as an inpatient or outpatient), you may receive more than one bill. For example, you may receive one bill that lists charges such as medical supplies, tests, and room charges. You also may receive one or more bills from different doctors giving you care or analyzing your test results during your stay, such as emergency room doctors, surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, radiologists or pathologists.

Insurance Coverage

If you have insurance coverage, Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center and Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital will bill your insurance company for services. Please keep in mind:

  • You are responsible for understanding your benefits package and for contacting your insurance company if you have questions about your coverage.
  • If you are scheduled for tests or treatment, you are responsible for completing your insurance company's requirements (such as pre-certifications, prior authorizations, second opinions, etc.) before you arrive to receive care.
  • In emergency situations, come to the hospital first. We will talk with you about insurance coverage later at an appropriate time.
  • You must present an insurance card when you arrive for scheduled services.
  • You are responsible for paying co-payments, deductibles, and for non-covered services at the time the service is provided.

If you do not have health insurance or if you are worried that your insurance may not be sufficient, please ask to speak with one of our financial counselors.

Other Payment Options

In addition to insurance, payments for your care may be made with:

  • cash (payable in person only)
  • personal checks (please include your account number to make processing faster)
  • money orders (please include your account number to make processing faster)
  • credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express)

Online Bill Payment

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center and Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital now offer a secure, convenient way for you to pay your hospital bill online.

While you can use this system to pay your HOSPITAL bills, you cannot pay separate bills sent to you by other doctors who provide care (e.g., emergency room doctors, surgeons, anesthesiologists, cardiologists, radiologists or pathologists).

Please review your bill carefully and call our office with any questions before using the online bill pay system in order to have the smoothest, most productive experience.

Difficulty Paying Your Hospital Bill

As part of our commitment to treat our patients with compassion, courtesy and respect, Ephraim McDowell Health, Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center and Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital offer financial assistance for those who are deemed to be in financial need due to personal lack of finances.

Each applicant (regardless of race, creed, gender, age, or national origin) may apply for financial assistance. You must complete a written application and comply with program requirements. Your eligibility depends on completing the entire request process.

Our Patient Financial Assistance Program has a number of options:

  • Establishing a payment plan
  • Determining your eligibility for a reduction in the amount you owe for some services
  • Helping you apply for Medicaid
  • Determining your eligibility for KHCP
  • Determining your eligibility for in-house charity care

We will need to receive information about your job, income, insurance coverage, family size and other information to help determine the appropriate program that you may qualify for assistance. We realize some of the questions we must ask may be sensitive, however, it is necessary that we receive all of the information that we request so we can try to help you.

You have our commitment that we will respect you and your privacy during this process because we believe that no person should avoid seeking care due to inability to pay.

Which Services Qualify
Our Financial Assistance Program applies to all medically necessary patient services that are provided, charged, and billed at our hospitals, including inpatient, emergency services, and outpatient services.

Which Services Do Not Apply
Our Financial Assistance Program does not include:

  • Cosmetic surgery
  • Services that are not medically necessary
  • Services to patients who qualify for county, state, federal or other assistance programs
  • Services that result from a patient going out of their insurance network for care
  • Bills you receive from physicians and other providers who participate in your care, but receive separate payment for their services.

Collections Practices

If any amount that is listed as private pay/self pay for your hospital bill is not paid in full or if reasonable payment arrangements are not made and satisfied according to our guidelines, then after 150 days the account will be referred to our collection agency for collection of the delinquent balance owed.

We use these steps to help avoid the need for using a collection agency:

  • Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center and Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital will use reasonable efforts to collect amounts due for services regardless of payor, unless the services are determined to be charity. If insurance coverage is available, we will bill all Medicare, Medicaid and third party insurance when the carrier accepts assignment of benefits. Any co-payments will be collected at the time of service.
  • We mail you (five days after charges are entered in our computer system) a statement showing a summary of the itemization of charges and that all of these amounts have been billed to Medicare, Medicaid and any third party payors.
  • When Medicare, Medicaid or any third party insurance company processes your claims, we will post any payment from them and any contractual adjustment detailed to us by the insurance company.
  • We will list on your account the amount(s) you are responsible for paying. If there are any additional insurance(s), we will bill them for the remaining balance.
  • We will then bill you for any remaining balance owed to us.
  • You will receive monthly statements for at least 150+ days (five to six statements) before they are placed with our outside collection agency for failure to pay.
