Heart Health Research Study

Goal of the study: to motivate and educate people to reduce their risk for heart disease.

 

Kentucky Risk Factors for Heart Disease:

  • 46th state out of 50 for deaths by cardiovascular disease
  • Third highest user of tobacco products
  • Fourth highest rate for obesity in all 50 states
  • Boyle County has 2nd highest rate for diagnosed anxiety or depression, a factor that has a direct correlation to cardiovascular disease

 

Study participants attend a series of educational classes given weekly for approximately 2 hours for 8-10 weeks. Classes will assist clients in setting individual goals while receiving the education and support necessary to accomplish these goals.  There are three data collections: an initial data collection, followed by classes, then another data collection and a final collection at 6 months to determine if lifestyle changes are maintained.

Who Qualifies:

  • Age > 44 in men or 55 in women
  • Diabetes
  • Current smoker or tobacco user
  • Depression, anxiety, excess stress
  • History of high blood pressure 
  • Family history of CVD
  • Gestational diabetes
  • Overweight or obese
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • History of abnormal Cholesterol level
  • Diet high in saturated fat or low in fruit and vegetable intake

Baseline data and follow-up measurements will be at the Ephraim McDowell Diagnostic Center on Daniel Drive.  The classes can be held at locations convenient for participants such as churches or work sites. Following are some of the benefits to participants:

  • Free lipid profiles, hs-CRP (inflammatory markers), Hg A1c at baseline, 3 months and six month follow-up
  • Free educational classes taught by Registered Nurses to assist in lifestyle modification to reduce the risk of heart attacks, stroke, and cardiovascular disease
  • Optional Genetic testing for research purposes to further knowledge in the field of heart disease prevention.
