About Us EMH Foundation

Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation

The Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation serves you

Created in 1992, our 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization enhances the quality of health and medical care in Kentucky counties served by Ephraim McDowell Health (EMH). EMH covers the day-to-day operating costs associated with the Foundation, including salaries and expenses. The result: 100 percent of every donation either increases our endowment to fund future projects or directly benefits projects currently serving communities within our region. In short, your dollars come back to your community, ensuring homegrown healthcare. To donate now, or for other ways to help, click here to find more information.

The Foundation listens to you

A community-based board of directors determines how Foundation funds are used to enhance the healthcare in this region. Programs currently supported fully or in part by the Foundation include:

  • Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital, the Stanford-based facility built using funds raised during the Foundation's capital campaigns in Lincoln and surrounding counties.
  • Hope Clinic and Pharmacy, which since 2006 have provided nearly 2,000 clinic visits and nearly 12,000 prescriptions to low-income, chronically ill patients who lack insurance.
  • The Thomas Smith Scholarship Fund, funding education for students from rural areas who enroll in allied health programs and who, after graduation, intend to practice in rural areas.
  • The Chaplain's Discretionary Fund, a valuable source of assistance for needy patients who are discharged from any Ephraim McDowell Health hospital and are unable to purchase certain vital medications, durable medical equipment, or other medical supplies needed to aid their recovery.
  • New diagnostic and treatment equipment for A Children's Place, McDowell Place of Danville, EMH hospitals and other EMH facilities.
  • The University of Kentucky Center for Rural Health-Danville, a program developing new and innovative ways to improve health and medical care in rural communities across south-central Kentucky.
  • Community Services Department in its annual colorectal, skin and prostate cancer screenings.
  • Faith Community Nurses educational program through funding of the Community Services Department.
  • Funding of technology that supports enhanced patient clinical services or services provided through numerous non-clinical initiatives of Ephraim McDowell Health.

The Foundation partners for your benefit...

Our Foundation partners with other reputable organizations in the region to increase the benefits that EMH facilities provide.

One partner is the Central Kentucky Cancer Program, which is improving resources for cancer patients and their families. The program CommunityServices1provides greater access for cancer screenings and cancer prevention within the region; and its major fundraiser each year is Luminosity , a fun night out with loved ones that also raises money for cancer initiatives. In 2008, for example, this partnership raised funds to purchase a new stereotactic breast biopsy unit for Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, which allows women to have non-invasive biopsies done without the effects and recovery time associated with surgical biopsies. Other partners that help the Foundation support the Hope Clinic and Pharmacy include The Salvation Army, the Boyle County Health Department, Heart of Kentucky United Way and Ephraim McDowell Health.

Why should you partner with us?

During the 21st century, the needs of the many are great. That's why Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation suggests some key reasons why you should consider partnering with us:

The Foundation has a distinguished track record extending back to 1992 that includes the creation of the Cancer Care Center at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.  During 2008, Ephraim McDowell Health provided $7.3 million in charity care to individuals with low incomes or who were uninsured or underinsured. Other EMH entities also give back to our communities, including Auxiliaries at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center and Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital; Faith Community Nursing and Community Service Health Screenings; youth activities such as an Arts Walk for Kids and specialized Wellness Center programs. The list of such programs, in fact, is quite long.

The Central Kentucky Cancer Program

If you are diagnosed with cancer, or if one of your family members receives a cancer diagnosis, you can depend on the Central Kentucky Cancer Program to make trying times a little easier. This unique, community-based program was created in 1996 as a collaborative effort among the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation, the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, local physicians, cancer survivors and concerned citizens. Our program's services include:

  • Prevention: Choosing a healthy lifestyle may help to reduce your risk for certain cancers. For this reason, our program provides community education classes to inform the public about lifestyle choices that can aid in prevention. These classes heighten public awareness about the risks of cancer, suggest ways to lower risk factors and stress the importance of early detection.
  • Screenings: Because early detection is vital to winning the fight against cancer, our program sponsors annual screenings for prostate, skin and colorectal cancer. On average, more than 800 people participate in these free screenings—and about one in three people screened is subsequently referred for more extensive testing.
  • Mobile Mammography: Mammography remains the best tool for detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages. EMH's mobile mammography unit travels to corporate and community sites in Boyle and surrounding counties, making it convenient for nearly 70,000 women in these communities to have access to this important procedure. Please call (859) 239-1401 to schedule a visit by our mobile mammography unit to your business or organization.
  • Diagnostics: Our program anually conducts fundraising events and applies those dollars toward the purchase of specialized equipment needed to diagnose cancer. In 2008, these funds helped secure a new stereotactic breast biopsy unit at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center. Currently, campaigns are under way to secure digital mammography equipment and a reader/work station.
