Heart disease is the nation’s number one killer of women. Nearly half a million women will lose their life to the disease this year – that’s approximately one death per minute. To raise awareness of how individuals can reduce their risks for heart disease, Ephraim McDowell Health is promoting several activities in February, which is observed as American Heart Month.

“With this disease killing so many women each year, we must raise awareness in the communities we serve,” said Shelly Selby, Director of Cardiopulmonary and Laboratory Services at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center.

Free Health Screenings

Are you at risk for heart disease? The Community Service Department at Ephraim McDowell Health is offering free health screenings (cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index and stress vulnerability) between February 6 and 27 in churches throughout Boyle and surrounding counties. No appointment is necessary. These potentially lifesaving screenings can help you determine if you are at risk. If schools are closed due to the weather, these screenings will be cancelled.
