The Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation
The Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 1992 to enhance the quality of health and medical care in the communities served by Ephraim McDowell Health. Contributions from the communities we serve help us meet the healthcare needs of individuals in those communities. Financial gifts to the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation help us to carry on those endeavors. A community-based Board of Directors of the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation determines the use of funds for purposes that best fit our mission. No donations to the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation are used for day-to-day operations of any entity within Ephraim McDowell Health.
In recent years, the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation held a community fund-raising campaign to build the new Ephraim McDowell Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford (Lincoln County). This campaign gave the community an opportunity to make a great investment in their community. The hospital is a proud reminder of what community action can do for a much-needed facility.
The Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation’s mission is accomplished through several programs available within the Foundation. The Foundation partners with the Central
Kentucky Cancer Program (CKCP), which has an advisory Board of Directors, to improve resources for patients and their families impacted by cancer, access to cancer prevention and cancer screening in the central Kentucky area. The CKCP has a major fund-raiser each year, Luminosity, which provides a fun night out with friends and raises money for a good cause. Luminosity is held at the Danville County Club on the second Saturday of August.
The Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation directs the Hope Clinic and Pharmacy for patients below 150% of the federal poverty level and who have at least one of five chronic health conditions, no insurance and/or access to other third-party payors. Services are provided at no cost to the patient. The Clinic’s mission in partnership with the Salvation Army is to provide these patients with medical and pharmaceutical care to enable them to manage their illness and find normalcy in their lives. The Hope Clinic and Pharmacy also serves to help prevent chronically-ill patients from using the Emergency Department for their medical care in order to provide management of their chronic conditions. The Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation raises funds for the Hope Clinic within the community.
The Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation has a scholarship program – the Thomas Smith Scholarship Fund – for applicants to rural allied health programs who wish to stay and practice in rural areas. The Foundation also provides help to patients with some medications, durable medical equipment or other needs to help attain the best results upon discharge from any Ephraim McDowell Health facility. Other facilities helped by the Foundation’s Board of Directors are A Children’s Place, with new equipment and toys for the children enrolled there, and McDowell Place of Danville, which received a magnifying reading lamp to benefit residents with reading difficulties.
In partnership with the Central Kentucky Cancer Program, the Ephraim McDowell Health Care Foundation raised and donated the funds necessary to buy a new Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Unit at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in 2008. This purchase has prompted much pride in the community as those involved feel as though they bought this unit, which allows women to have a non-invasive breast biopsy done without the effects and recovery time of surgical biopsies.
